There's nothing like GTA: Online, for better and for worse

The promise of Grand Theft Auto: Online is an intoxicating one. GTAV’s world remains one of, if not the most remarkable in gaming history, and the idea that you and a group of friends can team up and wreak havoc upon that world seems too good to be true.
To some extent, it is too good to be true. GTAO suffers from a myriad of technical issues and limitations, including ridiculous loading times, crashes, game-breaking glitches, and terrible anti-cheat. It’s like a complicated, unwieldy machine with hundreds of unseen components. If it fails, your only two options are to start from scratch, or give up.
But when it all comes together, when you finally find your friends after five minutes of loading screens and ten minutes of yelling at each other on Discord to “go here”, the experience is unparalleled. The first few hours we spent roaming the world were violent co-op magic, like a depraved, extravagant Scorcese montage with a body count that would turn eyes at the ICJ. We did missions, did drugs, blew things up, got haircuts, bought clothes, bought cars, stole cars, shot police, shot pedestrians, and of course, shot each other. Being homebound due to Covid, our at-first daily, then weekly GTA sessions kept us connected, the first time a game had done so since our short-lived Minecraft phase in March of last year.
But yesterday, as we failed the same section of the Diamond Casino Heist for about the twentieth time, one of my friends broke the silence. “Is anyone having fun?”
Several months ago, I posted a rant on this subreddit about the singleplayer, bemoaning its weak story, poor gunplay, unnoticeable progression, and surprisingly empty open-world. I stand by what I wrote, perhaps even more so now that I see how much more compelling GTAV could have been if it had included online’s heists, vehicles, and properties as DLC.
That said, online is not without fault. While there’s a massive catalogue of things to buy, the grinding necessary to purchase these things is awful, making even Cookie Clicker feel productive. GamesRadar says the Heists, which themselves require expensive properties and a substantial initial investment to initiate, net you about 400k an hour, which isn’t all that much considering how much vehicles and properties cost.
We realized early on that the disparity between GTAO’s prices and its payouts was a manufactured pain point, the remedy being the game’s overpriced Shark Cards. Rather than dig out our wallets, we abided by GTA’s longstanding moral tradition and hacked ourselves enough money to buy every car, every property, and every weapon in the game. But even without the grind to worry about, GTAO had no qualms with wasting our time. The loading screens are the most obvious example of this, but these are, I believe, unavoidable given the scope of what you’re loading into. Where it’s less forgivable is in the tedious minutiae and the absence of systems that should be present.
The more we played, the more frustrated I became. Why can I only fast travel to my properties as a CEO? Why can’t I claim all destroyed vehicles at once? Why can’t I skip these stupidly long cutscenes? Why do I have to wait to spawn in a vehicle? In a way, it makes the same mistake as its singleplayer counterpart. Though it has incredible setpieces that you won’t find in any other game, the vast majority of your time is spent preparing for them.
I don’t believe games should have infinite longevity, so I don’t fault GTAO for losing its sheen after eighty-some hours. Overall, I had a good time. Tearing through hordes of cops in a pink Insurgent. The terrific Pacific Standard Heist. Getting picked up by my friend in a disgusting anime car that he claimed wasn’t his. Being repeatedly stalked and kidnapped over the course of several weeks by a hacker named “JOE BIDEN” who’d drive me around the map at light speed and drop boats on my head as I’d try to flee. And above all, having the opportunity to hang out with my friends during a pandemic. These are all experiences I’ll remember.
The hours I spent in loading screens, driving from one side of the map to the other for the hundredth time, and listening to Lester talk about skinny dipping? I’ll remember those too, though nowhere near as fondly.

Galactic Economics 2: Trustworthy

Jen and Sarah spent the next week doing research. The Internet was filled with contradictory information about monetary theory and economics, and neither of them really had the background to evaluate the arguments that everyone was having.
However, Sarah reminded them both, they didn't need to look at a perfect system, just one that worked. So, they started digging through Wikipedia articles and online textbooks on the history of money and how they came to be.
"Hey, did you know they used to use salt as currency?" Sarah asked as she skimmed through a particularly fascinating documentary about Middle Age East African economies.
"Is this some kind of joke about mining salt?"
"No, it's real, look. And apparently the word salary is from the Latin word salarium for money used to buy salt," Sarah continued fascinated.
Of course, they couldn't use something as simple as salt to represent money. In fact, they couldn't use any commodity either.
Over the last week, one of the alien traders caught wind that gold was extremely valuable on Earth, so they'd brought them in by the ton load. Gold was still useful for electronics and some dentistry, but the price of gold, mostly propped up by its value in rarity, crashed hard.
The problem with currency in galactic trading, as Sarah discovered, was that there wasn't a single commodity that was equally rare in every system.
No, whatever alternative they come up to the laughably outdated barter system had to be built on something far more rare and valuable than gold.
Something that even the most powerful human empires in history have struggled to collect.
It had to be built on trust.
"That's the system most modern currencies are based on," Sarah claimed, "you only accept dollars for work because you trust that you're going to be able to wake up tomorrow and spend it on… everything you need."
"Hmm well, we can't just ask them to take US dollars," Jen giggled. This would be so much easier if that weren't true.
"Why not?" Sarah asked, playing the devil's advocate.
"Well… well, like you said, they won't trust it! I certainly wouldn't if I were a trader! Furthermore, who knows? Maybe they have a printer in their ship that can duplicate money! Maybe we should ask them for that next time we bring Zarko some pears," Jen said, thinking out loud.
"I doubt it. The government keeps a lot of secrets about how they make Dollars , and I don't want the Secret Service knocking on my door," Sarah said. Until this week, she hadn't known that this was one of the lesser known duties of the USSS. Now that she knew it, it made the thought of attracting their attention even less palatable, "you're right. What about digital casino tokens? We can produce something that translates to Dollars and have our own system that tracks it all."
"Sure, that's not too hard to make. We would have a centralized money supply, where we don't trust each end point…" Jen continued on the brainstorm, thinking in terms of the technical system, "ok, so say we make SarahBucks, and peg its value to the US Dollar. One pound of pears would be worth 1.5 SarahBucks, one pound of sirloin steak is 6.99 SarahBucks at Safeway. That still doesn't explain how we'll get people to use it."
"I'm not sure. I need to think about this more," Sarah yawned, tired. "And I hate that name."
They agreed that they were stuck, and that SarahBucks was absolutely a terrible name.
Livermore Spaceport, Earth
A month after the spaceport opening, Sarah noticed that it had become less of a tourist attraction. There were far fewer people standing around gawking at the aliens, and a lot more companies trucking their best-selling products into the spaceport for trade.
After their abuse of Jen's cousin's employee pass got discovered by the spaceport authorities, Sarah and Jen had started placing their own bids on getting into the spaceport through the official channels. Thanks to their existing connections with the managers at the spaceport and a growing bank account of value, they could still get in to continue their lucrative trade for magical alien goods.
A bit of a rich-get-richer type of situation.
The flavor of the month were these Bohor magical air filter machines that aggressively scrubbed the air of… anything you want them to.
The Bohor planet is basically the planetary equivalent of a toxic dump.
Sure, it had biomes; it wasn't a Star Wars sci-fi planet where the entire planet is either a desert or an ice-cold tundra or a forest. But the entire planet had been polluted so heavily by its occupants that it lowered the life expectancy by half before the Bohors found a solution:
They simply filtered their entire atmosphere through air filter machines and then buried the toxins and garbage they got out of it in a very deep landfill, somewhere where very few people lived. Pretty much the kind of solution you'd expect out of a species that created the original problem in the first place.
Zikzik, the alien that was the same species as Zarko, overheard a human asking about their rocket fuel and climate change, and brought in a cargo hold of them.
It was a massive hit.
Earth's climate change problem wasn't nearly as bad as Bohor, but it was relatively simple to program these machines to suck carbon out of its atmosphere and… bury them in a landfill.
At first, few of the human traders bought them, thinking that it was going to be at least a while before the problem became big enough that big governments were going to come to them to try to address the issue, but they had it all wrong.
Soon as word got out this was an option, big companies and philanthropists started lining up at their doors. As it turned out, literally sucking the carbon dioxide out of the air was easier and cheaper than modifying many of their industrial practices to actually be environmentally green. They didn't need to run more efficient factories to claim to be carbon-neutral; just pump as much carbon into the air in exchange for undoing that by sucking it out of the atmosphere after!
Some bean counters at a think tank in DC predicted that a few more shipments of these air filters will fix Earth's climate problems by themselves in about a decade, so every trader had a waiting list of corporations with PR problems willing to buy them.
Sarah and Jen had a couple vehicle manufacturing companies on their list who were trying to get Bohor air filters to use in lobbying for looser emission standards for their dirty gasoline cars.
Today, there were traders on all the landing pads, and they were all carrying air filters. Zarko's ship was there, and he was loading fruits into his spaceship with an alien looking forklift. Sarah and Jen approached his ship and noticed the truck driver standing there.
"Hey Benny, tempting the poor aliens with cherries this time?" Sarah waved good, grinning and looking at his cargo.
Technically, Benny is a competitor, or at least he drives for a competitor. The massive fruit conglomeration he worked for, Chuckita, had not neglected to notice the massive business opportunity sitting right here as many others have, and are now delivering straight to the aliens in exchange for massive profit margins.
But Benny was a good guy. One time Jen and Sarah were having some trouble finding a buyer for a bunch of legally dubious alien psychedelics. Benny was in his late 50s, not that great with the Internet either, so he'd introduced them to whom he referred to as "my money launderer". Aka, his 22-year-old son, Benny Jr, who had a habit of buying weed and other less than legal items off the deep web. Benny Jr had found a buyer for them within minutes and even generously offered to handle the deal for them to spare them the risk of meeting some psycho hopped up on an alien high in a dark alley somewhere.
"Heh! One of the bat aliens loves sweets but has a low tolerance for sour, so they treat cherries as some kind of an odd challenge fad. They eat a random cherry, and it's either so incredibly sweet they start drooling out of the mouths, or it's a sour one, and they freak out," Benny replied, in a low voice as if he were trying to keep it a big secret. "Zarko showed me a video, and it's the most hilarious thing I've ever seen".
"I think I've seen that one, have you seen the one where they drink wine?" Sarah chuckled at the memory. Alien videos have been a big hit on YouTube. Some human merchants were trading fruit for aliens to take videos of the galaxy. Which they monetized, of course.
"No," Benny's ears perked up. Chuckita doesn't make wine, but if selling wine to aliens was going to be a thing, they were a big supplier of grapes… "Is it gonna be a thing?"
"Well guess what we brought today?" Jen also grinning from ear to ear, and holding up a big carton of low-quality box wine.
"Awww seems like I'm always one step behind you guys," Benny moaned in exaggeration, "I tried to get my money launderer to tell me what aliens would want but all he does is play video games on the Internet, kids these days."
Luckily, Zarko chose this moment to step out to spare them from more good-humored ribbing from the boomer. "Ah Sarah and Jen, you brought the grape wine this time!"
"Yup," Sarah beamed, "and I see you've run out of air filters to trade again!"
"Sadly yes," Zarko tilted his head in shame, "my ship is overdue for a cargo space upgrade, but I haven't found a port that would do it for fruit yet. Next time?"
"Alright! Alright! We'll leave our special wine with you, but you better get us some extra good filters next time!" Jen scolded mockingly. Zarko has gotten a lot more comfortable doling out IOUs since the first time.
"Of course. Only the best for you two," Zarko said with a greasy human smile imitation that almost made Sarah laugh out loud. It reminded her of a ridiculous cartoon sloth.
"By the way," Sarah asked casually, "how much is a spaceship worth on your planet?"
Zarko sobered up his expression and looked at her curiously. It was a question that other humans had asked before. To him, it was a good sign. This meant that they all dreamt of the stars. But he didn't expect such a question from someone as seemingly practical as Sarah. She had a lot of fruit, sure, but fruit doesn't build spaceships.
After thinking for a while, he replied honestly, "ships aren't traded for one single item. My family traded for the parts to build mine for generations."
He pointed at his spaceship.
Zarko proudly explained, "this is the work of eighteen generations of trading. My family was one of the richest on Zeep-zep. For thirteen generations, they traded for each of the parts on this beauty. Then, for the last five, my ancestors traded excess food from the tenant farmers on their land to expert craftsbeings that could put it together."
"Wait, eighteen generations?" Jen gasped. Eighteen generations ago, her family were probably peasants on a farm in Korea or something…
"Yes," Zarko said, looking at them with a little of pity. "After getting the spaceship, my family has traded in it for twelve generations, through civil wars and disasters."
He did some math on his hands, and said, "that's about four hundred of your years. That's why it's very unlikely that you will never go to space."
Looking at the stunned expression on their faces, he tried to lighten the mood. Zarko said mischievously, "unless you're willing to part with some more of your fruit, in which case I'll let you sit in the back seat for a whole route!"
"Hold on, back up, I'm still stuck on the multiple generations part," Sarah said seriously. "You're saying you're flying on a spaceship that started to be built thirty generations ago? That's… about a millennia for us."
"Yes," Zarko answered, "and that's why only thirteen families on my planet have had the privilege of owning one in our long history. No offense, but that's why I think no human will ever own their own spacecraft for at least fifteen more generations."
Something is wrong here, Sarah thought. The budget for NASA's FTL spacecraft was in the hundreds of millions. Yes, for a fruit farmer, that would be many generations of work if all their descendants worked in the same industry. But there were over three thousand billionaires on Earth, not including the tens of thousands of corporations that had assets or market value over a billion. And the prices for the spacecraft would surely go down as time went on…
For a planet like Zarko's to only have thirteen spaceships over generations of their development…
As they were walking away, Benny asked, "have you guys noticed something weird about the way these aliens do business?"
"Yes." "God yes." They said in unison.
"We've been thinking about it for a while, but these guys not having money is a major problemo," Sarah said, looking around surreptitiously, "Zarko and Zikzik keep talking about not being able to find someone who can upgrade their hulls for fruit. And sometimes they come with nothing good, and we're supposed to just drive our fruits all the way back!"
"And if you think about it, if they were human ships, think about truckers who don't own their trucks. We'd have loans or something to deal with the cargo space problems, and they'd be paid for by profits in a few trips," Jen added.
"The numbers he gave us for spacecraft ownership seem insane," Sarah agreed. "Your company could probably afford to order one right now, not to mention hundreds of others. They must all be dirt poor!"
Benny seemed relieved that he wasn't the only one who was thinking this, "exactly! I'm thinking we just introduce them to the concept of Benjamins and solve all their problems and ours. Would certainly make the return trip a lot easier for me if I didn't have to drive all the way to Berkeley for junior to launder all this crap!"
"We thought of that too," Sarah said as Benny pretended to groan again, "but we couldn't figure out how to get them to take money with no intrinsic value."
"Oh that shouldn't be too hard," Benny said, who's clearly already thought through this problem in his head, "we play a little game called good cop, bad cop."
"Good cop bad cop?"
"Sure, it's a mind game the cops play, where they put you in a room-"
"Yeah we know what it is, but how does that help us?" Sarah said impatiently, an idea tugging on her subconscious.
"Well you see," Benny clearly smugly enjoying this moment where he's thought of something that the duo did not, "you two come with an empty truck next time, and you tell Zarko that you'll give him a wad of clean crisp cash, fresh from the bank, for some of his air filters. And when he asks you why he'd take the cash, you just tell him that he can give it to me in exchange for some of my fruits."
"What does that have anything to do with good cop bad cop?!" Jen asked.
"That has nothing to do with good cop bad cop," Sarah chimed in, but the idea was beginning to form in her head, "but it's a good start. We don't want to deal in cash. It's too risky. It could get the feds onto us and there's a bunch of laws around it that I'm not sure about."
"But what we can do is have an internal money system for traders pegged to the US Dollar!" Jen completed.
"Yup, so when Zarko comes back next time, we tell him he has an account with the Bank of Benny, we give him a fancy looking card that has his bank account number and give him a pin code, and we deposit a certain amount of BennyBucks into his account for giving us air filters. Then when you come around, Zarko gives you his card and pin, and gives you BennyBucks for your fruit," Sarah finished.
"Aha. And then I come to you two, say, I would like to convert BennyBucks in my Bank of Benny account to good old American dollars," Benny extrapolated, completing that final step.
"Yeah! We'll just wire you the money and everyone gets theirs," Sarah exclaimed, happy they've finally thought through the loop and gotten someone on board.
"BennyBucks is a terrible name though," Jen said, calming everyone down a little, "and why are we getting so excited over the basic concept of currency? And why haven't aliens figured this out? Maybe it's against some kind of space trading code."
"Who knows? Maybe we just try it on Zarko and see if it works out," Benny said, a glint in his eyes, "and then we expand, galaxy-tically."
"Galactic credits!" Sarah exclaimed, "that's what we'll call it."
They agreed that it was the least worst name that they'd come up with so far. It was boring, but when it came to finances, maybe boring and cliché was a good choice after all.
"Explain again. I am trying to understand," Zarko said two days later as he offloads the air filters he'd promised.
"C'mon dude, for the fifth time," Sarah exasperated, "it's not that hard. We give you a bank account card and have you set up a secret number…"
Jen had spent the last two days coding up a storm. Technically, a simple debit system wasn't that hard, but she had to make a website interface that Benny could go up to and enter his account, Zarko's card information and amount, then let Zarko type in his code…etc. She'd mused that it would have been easier to just do this all in a cloud-based spreadsheet, but that wouldn't scale up if they had more customers.
Sarah had the account cards laminated and designed a logo: the letters GC, for Galactic Credit, and a stylized version of a Milky Way in the background. Part of the value in a trustworthy system is to look official, and you can't get much more official than laminated cards.
"Yes, I understand that part," Zarko said, clearly displaying his frustration on his facial expression as well, "but I don't understand why Benny would give me his fruit for just entering a number."
"Because we have an agreement with him that he'll take it in exchange for fruit!" Sarah was sure this was the umpteenth time she had to explain this, but clearly Zarko was not getting it.
"Is it similar to a debt?" Zarko said suspiciously, as if debt was this dark magic that the humans were performing on him, "I have never heard of this kind of debt before."
"Yes, it's a debt, of sorts," Jen cut in. The last time he had asked this exact question, they'd said no, and that led to fifty other questions and explanations that went nowhere, so nothing could go worse if they said yes-
"Ok. I don't understand," Zarko did his sloth version of a sigh, it was cute, but at the same time frustrating for Sarah and Jen, "But I can try it. I know you two are not trying to trick me. Do I get my fruits before I take off?"
"Yes! You go to Benny-" Sarah started.
"Yes! And that's it. Benny gives you his fruit," Jen cut her off, knowing that this was about to launch into yet another long, long line of questions they just can't deal with right now.
Sarah set up a new account for Zarko, asked him for a 6 digit base ten pin code (thank god Zarko was a ten digit species) which he promptly memorized, and hoping that Jen's prototype website wouldn't fail, showed him how they were "giving" Zarko 40,000 Galactic Credits for 8 Bohor air filter machines into his account ("No, you can't have my iPad. It's on your account card now. Show this to Benny later.")
"Well that worked out great," Benny said as he watched them wire him the $25,000 for his truck shipment of fruit. Though his costs were in the low thousands, he could have easily fleeced Zarko for his full 40k. But they all agreed that wasn't the point, which was to get Zarko to see the benefits of using a currency system abstracted from goods and services.
"Dude, you weren't there," Sarah complained, "I don't understand why he had such a hard time understanding money. Money equals goods. Bing bang boom. It's like these guys don't have the capability for abstract thinking."
"No they definitely do. You can't build spaceships without abstract math and science," Jen said, "but he clearly had a deathly aversion to using money. I think it's tied to some taboo to debt somehow. All the other species must have it because none of the aliens we've met have even mentioned anything close to a real economy."
"Whatever it is," Benny sighed happily, "I'm just happy I didn't have to go home with my truck full of weird alien toys."
"Yup. The next step is to get all the human traders to take credits. At least they'll have no problems understanding the benefits."
Sarah made some calls to the trader licensing office at the spaceport. There she found a manager willing to part with phone numbers and contact information for the other human traders, for an "information fee" of course, and started making calls to the other human traders.
It wasn't easy. Some traders were representatives of bigger food companies, and didn't have all the flexibility to make these kinds of decisions. And others no doubt were thinking of copying their system for their own profit. But they all saw the benefits of a unified network of currency debiting because they've been suffering the same problems that Sarah, Jen, and Benny had been.
Over the next few days, all the human traders agreed to take galactic credit from the aliens, which they knew they could exchange for cash with Sarah and Jen.
"We are officially in business."
In economics, there's a distinction made between different kinds of money. There's commodity money, usually gold or silver. There's representative money, which is currency backed by commodities like gold or silver. And then there's fiat money, which is not backed by any intrinsic value, but rather by government decree, hence fiat.
Galactic Credits fall into some kind of weird hybrid category between representative and fiat money. They're backed by the Dollar, which is fiat money, but also which makes them representative money. This means that the people issuing them, in this case Jen and Sarah, are not supposed to create them without also having a corresponding US Dollar in their bank account.
Of course, Sarah and Jen hadn't signed an ironclad contract with the other human traders that they're always guaranteed to take their galactic credits and exchange for money, so technically that meant that one day Sarah could simply "deposit" a large number of credits in her account and buy all the goods she wanted from Zarko, or potentially the other traders.
That would, however, be slaughtering the golden goose for the meat.
After all, they didn't want to sell fruit or Bohor air filters.
They wanted to sell the concept of money.
"Why would I take this over fruit?" Zikzik sniffed. He was known as a sharp one by all the human traders. If there's any new alien fad coming down the pipeline, chances are Zikzik is the first one to touchdown with a cargo hold full of it.
Unlike many of the other traders, he was fairly consistent in his dealings. This much fruit is for this much air filters. He knows his price, and he lets you know it too. Everyone suspected he kept careful records of all his selling and buying somewhere in his ship, but he's never brought them out. Maybe he just had a sharp memory.
"It's very consistent," Sarah insisted, trying to appeal to his affinity for a stable and predictable exchange, "one pound of fruit today is the same as one pound of fruit tomorrow, and you can deal in fractions."
Completely ignoring that most fruits are seasonal, and price changes, and inflation, she thought, let's start here.
"Fractions, you say?" Zikzik seemed thoughtful, or maybe he's just scratching an itch on his snout, Sarah could never tell with these aliens.
"Yes, fractions," said Jen detecting the slightest bit of opening, "you can trade your air filters for credit. Then you can trade maybe three quarters of your credits to fill your cargo with fruit. The next time you come down here to Earth, you would only need to bring half the amount of air filters as the first trip, combined with the credits you have left, you can leave with a full cargo load anyway!"
Is that how that math goes, Sarah thought, but didn't cut in, as Zikzik seems to be nodding, an oddly universal gesture for affirmation.
"Five eighths of the credits," Zikzik argued, "The air filters are harder to get now because the Bohor are running low, and they need time to make more."
Bargaining! There we go! That's what we're talking about! Sarah almost pumped her fists in the air and gave him a high five, not a great idea given how sharp his claws are as she found out when trying to shake his hands a couple of weeks ago.
"Ok, you would still have to negotiate that amount with each human trader," Sarah replied adding, "but they all deal in Galactic Credits."
They signed him up for an account, gave him a card, and set up his pin code. It had only taken half an hour to get Zikzik on board, which was significantly faster than the hours they'd taken to explain this to Zarko, despite them being the same species. Was it xenocist that she'd assume it was going to take just as long, Sarah wondered.
Looking at the line of traders, she sighed. This was going to be a long day.
Luckily, Zikzik accepting the credits made for great advertising. He was known for being a sharp trader, so if he doesn't think it's a scam, it must not be, right?
Sarah and Jen managed to get two other traders that day onto credits, and one more who was dipping his proverbial toes into the water.
It was a good day.
Jen had been working hard. The Galactic Credits website was now on its 16th major iteration. She'd beefed up the security on it, to make sure none of the other human traders got any funny ideas. Backups became more automatic and frequent, and there was now a rollback and dispute mechanism, not that it was being used yet.
Sarah had also been working hard. She'd been sitting in meetings all day with legal, finances, and now they had a small army of people who were ready to help out if they got into trouble there. Galactic Credits is now officially a tax paying LLC incorporated in the great state of Delaware.
Benny Jr, who had just finished college, had come in as well. He was no good at talking to clients, but he's what the duo would refer to as "street smart". Occasionally, the alien traders would bring in some exotic or ahem, dubiously sourced items, and he would know exactly where to convert that into cold hard cash. On the spreadsheets, his dealings were adding up to a nice fat padding on the margins for Galactic Credits, which to this point, hasn't been making any money other than in the fruit and air filters exchange business.
They were now working out of a rented office in downtown Livermore, with a very nice view of a brick-lined pub that offers numerous craft beers and the old railroad that runs through the heart of town.
Ironically, there's a Bank of America branch across the street, not far from the office itself, the company that had invented the BankAmericard and started the credit card revolution, seemingly oblivious to this new competitor moving into town, literally and figuratively.
They had many brilliant finance experts who were working on something, surely, but established financial institutions are not always great at moving fast and adapting to changing technology. There were many regulations to worry about, and the stakes were a lot higher.
There's something very quaint about the town itself. Some people didn't consider it part of the Bay Area metro area itself, but with the latest BART expansion station they recently built, that's been less and less true.
Now, it was literally the town where the train tracks ended. And where the final frontier began.
For the people in the office, it's also where they dreamt about a new financial revolution in the galaxy.
Some people have critiqued this chapter on the grounds that established financial institutions would have thought of this idea on day one. I appreciate the feedback, but that is a rosy view of the velocity at corporations in my opinion. I've personally worked in some of these companies, and if someone brought up this idea, it would probably have taken at least a month to get the idea through various risk audits and legal reviews.
In terms of technology, much of banking still operates on software that predates the modern Internet. This is one of the reasons why fin-tech startups have been able to beat them on time-to-market, despite massive institutional or financial disadvantages. It's why companies like PayPal, Square, Stripe, Venmo… etc could compete with the incumbents with the development of the Internet.
Sure, an intern in engineering or tools would have a semi-working prototype by week three, but the first line of code would be pushed to production by… month three. A much more likely scenario: some startup beats them to the punch, exactly as it happens here, and the large company offers their founders or investors an obscene amount of money to buy them out.

Fighting a Gambling Addiction?

This is a VERY important thread, especially if you are new to HUT. Here!

Story Time!!!

“Happiness” - By Anonymous Person
Then I stopped to think, if helping a little kitten could make me smile, maybe doing something for people could make me happy.
So the next day I baked some biscuits and took them to a neighbour who was sick in bed.
Every day I try and do something nice for someone. It made me so happy to see them happy.
Today, I don’t know of anybody who sleeps and eats better than I do. I’ve found happiness by giving it to others.
When she heard that, the rich lady cried. She had everything money could buy, but she had lost the things money cannot buy.
The beauty of life does not depend on how happy you are; but on how happy others can be because of you.
Happiness is not a destination, its a journey. Happiness is not tomorrow, it is now. Happiness is not dependancy, it is a decision. Happiness is what you are, not what you have!
P.S. - Hope you have a happy fun filled day

After episode 33, I really feel like we need to address the Gacha Situation seriously

This is gonna be a really long, rambling post about gacha, gambling, addiction, psychology and ethics. If you want the TL;DR, here it is: Joey and Garnt are at the very least irresponsible influencers, and at the very worst they might have a serious addiction that stems from a low dopamine life-style.
We all most likely watched the episode and know what happened and what was talked by who, but for further context, if you are unaware of anything, even after the memes, on the last episode of Trash Taste Podcast, specifically in the last 40 minutes of it, the Boys discussed (and argued) about the gacha game scene and gambling addiction. You can check it out on the sticky post on the top of the subreddit front page.
To cut it short, Connor argued that gacha games are just as if not more dangerous than actual gambling, specifically for a few reasons. First, it is a game of no return. In real life gambling, you can (fleetingly) get real money back from it, and even make a considerable profit. Gacha games simulate the act of gambling while offering no significant reward or value other than a measle amount of dopamine and a cute character to play with. Secondly, the game is marketed towards older kids, teenagers and young adults on an age range of 12-25 years old, an age group where most individuals are either not mature enough to manage their money safely or even financially independent at all, with most people in this range not even being active members of society yet. Furthermore, the gacha-gambling model is largely unregulated and unsupervised by authority figures, be it responsible adults, laws or any other regulating institution.
To this, Garnt (largely) and Joey (in a lesser but still significant way) responded that, while they agree no one should be able or willing to spend such large amounts in these games, they do not pose significant harm to most people, and even further, can present justifiable value enough to be acceptable in their current forms, with minor changes. At one point, Joey expressed the idea that if these games made it difficult for him to spend money, he would mostly just not play them at all rather than go free-to-play. Garnt attempted to defend the idea that spending on these games was not necessary and going the F2P route was not only possible, but easy. He himself, however, admitted to that not being the case with him.
This is the thick and short of it. Now let me get into the main argument this post is attempting to make.
Connor's position along the entire discussion was entirely and utterly reasonable, and not only that, but even after being soft-gaslighted into being less harsh on his stance, he still was the only one willing to take the problem seriously at all.
Garnt and Joey, kn the other hand, began the discussion with an ironic and memey tone, not taking it at all seriously. When Connor's stance didn't change and his points began hitting a little too close to home, that's when they got defensive of their point and tried to appeal to various fallacious arguments and unbelievable takes. Most notably, Garnt defended that "If you have a problem with gambling or if you have poor self-control, you just should not be playing Gacha Games", which beyond being obvious, is a bonkers thing to say. It would be akin to saying "if you feel depressed or suicidal often, you should just ask for help and not kill yourself" or "if you have a drug problem, maybe don't go buy drugs". It is a statement that hides behind it's obvious correctness to take away attention from the fact that this adds nothing of value at all to the discussion, nor does it make for a suitable defense of the system that gacha ganes operate in.
The first big problem with this entire thing is that the three of them, both in the podcast and with their individual channels, have a great influencing power. Having your opinion, no matter who you are, broadcast to over a few hundred thousand people world-wide is bound to influence or resonate with some of the audience. When the person in question is a respected figure, speaking to an audience of admirers or fans, most of which at a young age, and within a subject matter of interest to the audience, the influence rate will grow even bigger. In this midst, there is statistically no way at least a handful of people didn't watch this episode and felt like they had their actions justified. Add to this that the gacha community at large is either aware but indifferent to the similarities it has to gambling, or straight up defensive of the entire model, and you have a pretty dangerous mixture of things here.
The second issue I see and hope to convey on this matter is that both Garnt and Joey seem unaware of just how scummy and messed up the tactics behind gacha games are. It's not just rate manipulation and constant advertising. The entire development process is centered around creating the perfect space for you to spend copious amounts of money without feeling that you really spent them. It goes so much deeper than just making cute girls to sell you. From the game page on the app store you get it from to the main menu, to the game design, to the in-game systems, to the rates, to the promotions, to the update cycle, to the end game, to the daily challenges, EVERY LITTLE ASPECT of it is engineered to rewire your bain into believing that it's not that bad to spend, and having the desire to do so more often than you reasonably would.
This is a very important one, amd Connor briefly touched on it in his rant. Cassinos, actual gambling places, build and thought to make you spend and lose, are like a glass door compared to the five inch lead wall that is the gacha strategy. They show you the rates at all times. They offer you the option to set yourself a limit. They make you aware that you are spending money, they cap the age at a minimum of 21, they have a lot of systems in place to control bad spenders. Of course, most of those came from law and regulations, but even before that, back in the 18th amd 19th centuries, no normal adult would advocate or defend that 12 to 18 year olds should be able to gamble real money into pieces of paper or cardboard cutouts. So imagine thinking, for even a moment, that what gacha games do is even close to okay. It is not, by any measure, morally, ethically or lawfully, okay.
But it gets worse. Way worse. Here is where I began actually worrying about the boys, in particular Joey and Garnt, the latter most of all.
They seem to actually believe that the above exposed is somehow justifiable based on little doses of dopamine, memories and the abstract idea of "the experience" you get. They compare spending ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS on a game to get TWO DIMENSIONAL IMAGINARY GIRLS to a night out with friends where you spend a hundred dollars in food or drinks.
What the actual f*ck.
This is not just bad. It's really, really bad. It's unreasonably and unbelievably absurd. It nearly collapses the entire concept of reality from just how bad a take this is.
No. No, no, no. NO. In no way, in no conceivable theoretical way, one of those things is comparable to the other. Never. This is the type of thing that depressed people tell themselves to justify self destructive behavior. Spending copious amounts of disposable income into games just to get "a daily dose lf dopamine" going is insane. Just for reference, you can get dopamine for free by doing any of the following:
Exercising
Finishing a task-list
Cleaning your room
Working on a passion project
Playing any sport, specially with friends
Going for a walk with you pet
Having a conversation with a friend or significant other
Having a good meal
Waking up from a good nap
Watching a fun movie
Traveling
Hiking
Riding a bike
Radical sports
Reading a good book
Seeing a long-time relative or friend you missed for a long time
Getting a hug
Having sex
Sleeping cuddled with you SO
Holding hands
Kissing
Watching the sun set/rise
Going to the beach
Camping
Playing an actual good videogame that isn't f*cking Genshin or FGO
This is not an exhaustive list. It's literally just things I thought off the top of my head while writing this. Some of those activities require some money to do, and some are impossible during the pandemic. But most of them are free/cheap and easy to do at home or with little to no contact with anyone.
If getting a good pull in a lootbox virtual casino is the best way you can think of to get any dopamine release, or if that release is so significant to you as to justify spending more money than some people make in a week, then I'm sorry, but you have a serious problem. I mean it. I know the Boys can do most or all of those things listed up there and much more. I know for a fact they are not in a situation of loneliness, vulnerability or isolation, even in the current world situation. So why is it that Garnt thinks gambling is a good solution for boredom in the quarentine? Or why did Joey insinuate that making it harder for him to spend money would just make him drop the game?
And if these two, that as I said are in a very privileged spot of having easy access to healthy ways to produce dopamine and conquer isolation, are having this kind of relationship with these games, what's to say of people around the world, including many of their listeners/viewers, who either live alone and/or have no perspective of a successful career with easy access to basically limitless disposable income like they do? What's to say of the teenagers who spend all night up playing games, watching anime, jerking off and stealing their parents' credit card to buy pulls? What's to say of the depressed university students who have a shitload of debt thrown at them and live an isolated, virtual life right now? What about them?
Joey and Garnt might not have any problem controlling themselves, or have enough money to waste such that a thousand dollars into gachas doesn't feel unreasonable, no matter how actually unreasonable it is. But they are either ignorant of the actual problem, or (and I sure hope I'm completely off on this one) completely unemphatic to their struggles. Because "Just don't play" is not a thing someone with empathy for the gambling addicts would say. Connor was deadass on this one.
And that leads us to the final nail in this horrific, goldplated coffin. The memes.
Yes, the memes.
There are so many memes. Garnt mentioned that "no one memes on the guys going bankrupt" while doing just that for half an hour. The entire gacha culture is basically a serious sociological and psychological problem deep-rooted into the heart of the zoomer generation. And yet it wears a mask mad e of memes, that hides the actual problem under a nearly impenetrable layer of irony, self-pity and depressive jokes. But the subject is not that funny under the magnified lens of a closer look.
The easygoing demeanor with which gacha addicts and casual underaged gamblers treat the entire thing is so light on the mood, so soft on the eyes, that you may just forget that those people might be ruining their lives. It's not a joke. It should not be treated like one. The meme culture around gacha fames has created more gambling addicts among 15 and 16 year olds than any illegal casino would ever dream of. These young people are just laughing away ridiculous sums of money for a teenager to spend, and feeling none of it until it is too late to go back and give up.
I am not trying to guilty trip any of the Boyys here, nor am I accusing them of being apologetic of underage gambling. I'm just trying to put this entire thing under a serious light. Because it needs someone to do so. This post comes from a place of worry and love, not one of disrespect or accusations. I simply want the Boys to look at this in a responsible way.
I might be talking to the walls here. I might really be just shouting in the vacuum. But if I can try to make my voice be listened to, I will. Because I must. If you read all the way down to here, I have two more things to say.
One is: please, do not let the monetization model these games operate in get to you. If you've spent any amount of money on them and feel tempted to continue, I insist you don't. If you have only ever played them without spending, and are still having fun, you're free to do so, but tread carefully.
And the other is: gacha mechanics can ruin much more beyond your financial wisdom. They are actively harmful to the games industry as a whole. Instead of making good games out of passion, these developers are being led to create mediocre games out of greed from the higher ups. If gou care about gaming at all, or if you just give a shit about an industry many people love, I request that you understand why gacha games are a bad sign, and that you spread that awareness, if you can. This is a really important subject to me and I think ut should be to other gamers as well.
Thank you for reading. Have a great day. Save your money.
P.S.: Garnt, Joey and Connor. If you guys read this, I love you and what you do. I listen to this podcast almost religiously, and I really enjoy all of it. Please, take care of yourselves and have a great 2021. Peace. (This is a shot in the dark, the chances of them reading this are so low I feel almost stupid. But hey, I tried huh?)

0 to Mythic – my thoughts on the game as a new f2p/letter to the devs

Hi everyone! My name is Mingos. You may have seen me around twitch and discord spamming in chat and worshipping Ludia. I like deck building games and I was a consistent legend hearthstone and top 20 Pokémon doubles player.
I took to Mythic last night on day 4 of starting the game (shoutouts to CopperPitch, BBQ, vhirvi, cautionfun, Professerf, DrStned, Meals, and everyone who has tuned in the stream to give me their wisdom) and I’d like to give some feedback and my thoughts on the game as a whole!
Gameplay
The gameplay is very dynamic and fist clenching and it brought back a lot of fond memories of me playing CCGs in the past and it was an absolute blast to go through the ranks! The gameplay functions incredibly similar to hearthstone – where each creature has an attack & health and upon receiving an attack, health is deducted with the creature dying once health reaches 0. There is nothing wrong with this style of combat but I was hoping that it had a little more distinction as games like yugioh, Pokémon TCG and MTG all have their own take on the combat system.
In saying that, the game has this thing called the sanctum – a shared pool of cards that players can choose upon appeasing their gods. I was initially very skeptical of this mechanic because it was advertised that Gods Unchained would have less RNG compared to other games and having random cards in a pool available each game? Lunacy. However, I have learned to realize that this sanctum adds a special flavor to the game. As it is available to both players, players can deny cards and out-maneuver the opponent. Simultaneously, it contains some “answers” such as relic removal for when an enemy draws an amazing relic early.
Finally, we have a modified mana system – you get increasing amount of resources each turn to play more cards. However, starting from the 6th mana, subsequent turns will only unlock a fraction of the mana with the full mana crystal unlocked after 2, 2, 3, 4 turns for mana 6, 7, 8, 9, respectively. I will go into detail about this in the balance section.
Gods
Currently there are 6 gods in the game, each with their god powers that you can choose (per game). It is quite likely that I don’t have access to the suite of cards available to each god and being a beginner certainly doesn’t help. My thoughts on the cards has been that they lack a bit of flavor and distinction to the gods. Take for example god of death who has more cards built around death, the void and afterlife, we would have cards like “Made Mark” belonging to god of deception when I think that’d be perfect for god of death. There are certain archetypes that are more accessible pertaining to the various gods but as a deckbuilder I feel that the synergies around these archetypes are not very well defined from a lore perspective. I am sure as more cards are added into the game, the more tools we will receive to explore these archetypes further.
Balance
I have a lot to say about this but I will only talk about the few main points. It feels like to me a lot of the card power is inspired by hearthstone and there is nothing wrong with that. As a theory crafter I look at each card’s worth by simply going mana cost + 1 i.e. a 1 cost should have about 2/2 of stats or value equivalent, 2 cost 3/3 and so on. The complication comes once we get to 6 mana and beyond where the value curve gets a bit out of hand. Looking through the cards, the value of 6 mana cards roughly follow the formula above and that feels a bit undervalued given that 6 mana comes online at turn 7. This is interesting because that means even control decks are pressured to put in a healthy amount (or maybe majority) of cards that are 5 cost or below. Since you would be mana locked pre turn 7 to 5 mana or below to stabilize. Looking through GUdecks it appears to me that 6+ cost cards are only picked when they are outliers such as legendaries or limited cards with the ability to develop even more value to win a game of attrition. Now conversely, if we look at the lower cost creatures, we have cards like switch duelist, pyramid warden, jinxblade duelist which present strong early game value or just a straight up threat that demands instant removal before snowball. Certainly, these cards are top tier cards and outliers but if we look at the upper mana costs, we have much fewer cases to draw examples from.
Most gods have a strong aoe board clear around 6th mana but lets evaluate that a little bit. Taking into account the extra mana we get, if we go first we would have a total of 27 mana before the opponent gets 6 mana. Conversely, 23 if we go second. That means if we can yield approx. 1.5 damage for each mana spent then we can win the game before turn 7. With cards like makeshift shiv or ritual rod which presents 5 and 6 points of damage, respectively, that is certainly not a problem once you have an optimized deck.
I do want to preface I am simply a new player and my point is simply that I feel the 6+ cost cards presently seem a bit undervalued, in their board presence and reactive abilities.
Community
Never change! EVERYONE has been amazing! Everyone has been incredibly supportive, from the players to the devs. I think the community is what made it so fun for me as it has.
Closing
If you have read this far, thanks! I have genuinely and thoroughly enjoyed the game and there are things that I chose to not address like UI and bugs because I am aware that the devs are aware of those issues as they are more directly attributed to player retention. Thanks for all your hard work! I also want to mention again these are just my thoughts as a fairly new player and from a beginner perspective only. One important thing I forgot to mention is that players get to KEEP their cards which is one of the driving points of the game and I hope the game gets more traction as it becomes more developed.
I often play deck builder games and occasionally play some music on stream. Feel free to reach out to me to ask about anything related to the game, your casino deck that you have built or anything else, or just say hi. I enjoy chatting and getting to know people so just having twitch chat send memes would be a blessing https://www.twitch.tv/mmmmingos.
Take care and peace out!

Just another lame post on stuff I would had love to see in CP2077, day dreaming.

I wrote this down earlier today while I was sitting around the house today as I wanted to jolt my thoughts down and I wanted to share. Nothing really to come out of it, just wanted to express what I think would had made CP2077 an even better game:
· Transportation
Full Subway system for night city. Multiple stops throughout Night City where you enter from the train station, and the trains are on a fix schedule to arrive at each once every hour and you can watch the scenery or you can choose to skip waiting and enter a cut scene that shows the train bringing you to your destination.
Self-driving cars / taxi services. Sit back and relax and again, view the nice sceneries of NC or press a button to execute a skip to your destination.
Both transportations costing a small amount of money for V.
· Romance Options
Although Judy, Panam, River, etc make for great romance options due how well we get to know these characters, it would be great to implement an option to romance random NPCs. i.e You go to a baclub in NC and you can chat up a NPC and that NPC has a been added to your list of contacts (Think Yakuza, or GTA). Now you can contact that NPC to meet you any time outside of missions and you can do some activities together, which brings me to my next section…
· Activities
Activities outside of missions/gigs around the city to keep V busy when he’s not only trying to make money but also trying to spend it. This would include the following…
· Underground fight clubs that meet up twice a week. Bare knuckle boxing, endless.
· Casinos, small (hidden and secretive) and big – for V to make some cash (or lose it).
· Arcades / Arcade center. Generic games to pass the time in.
· Netrunner card game – self-explanatory.
· Drinking/Drugs inside clubs/bars where V doesn’t get wasted after 1 drink.
· Concerts and shows to play music at club venues by NC artists.
· Eating/Drinking animations at food stands
· Ability to sit on any chair in the game world outside of missions or your apartment (i.e like sitting on a bench people watching).
· Customization; tattoos, cars, body mods, animation on getting cyberware, apartment.
· More streetwalkers.
· Just Things for the Hopeful…
· 3rd person view.
· More options for dialogue choices with random NPCs passing by.
· NC gets dark earlier or time goes slower during the night hours.
· Gang faction points.
· A ton of braindances, small and large to explore, some light and some super disturbing.
Although I’m sure CP2077 was never meant to be some kind of life sim, it is fun to think what kind of immersion could have really brought the world of CP2077 to life. When walking through Night City, it’s all I ever think about. The city is gorgeous. I love everything about the look of it but it always feels like something is missing.
I do enjoy the current state of the game to be honest and I’ve beaten it and it’s fun to come back to here and there in rotation with other games I’m playing right now but there is always this itch that isn’t being scratched with its current state.
The bugs have never really bothered me much (I’m sure a lot of you would disagree, and say that the bugs are really bad) I think the core of this game, if it had a lot more features, a lot of us would be able to look past the bugs a bit more.
I know most of these things will probably never come into fruition but it’s fun to think about and I’m sure some company will capitalize on the cyberpunk theme sometime down the road and try to do everything CP2077 did wrong – right. But only time will tell.

It’s Coooolin ! Hey there!
Are you new to HUT? About to fire it up for the first time? Here’s a guide for you! ... and tips at the verrryyyy end!!

Knowing the Menus

There’s a bunch of things to do in HUT under different categories they are ...
• HUT Central

• Team
Each of these have various things underneath them, so let’s talk about them.
HUT CENTRAL
First off we have a scroll-through menu on what new content is out.
New content; packs, and players gets released every week day at 5pm EST , unless it’s a Holiday - then we’ll get the content a day earlier.
You will see when the content is out of packs by the timer and the date on the banner shown - Winterinternational Players released Monday were a week long to pull.

Team of the Weeks are Wednesdays at 5pm EST. Available for the Week.
HUT RUSH
What else is there on HUT Central? You can go directly to HUT RUSH game mode by going to the banner using the left stick, highlighting it and clicking “X” or “A”.

Milestones have infinite time, do those for coins, players, packs. Do them all? Get yourself an Icon or Gold Collectable. — I’ll talk about these later.

Solo Play

Under Solo Play there is Squad Battles , and Challenges.
What is Squad Battles?
Squad Battles is playing your team against the A.I. for points. The higher difficulty; rookie, semi-pro, pro, all-star, superstar - and opponents OVR - i.e., 77 or 88 - the more points you can obtain. To get max points, score 5 goals, and have 20 shots on net. Points will increase as more people play, and get updated weekday, 5pm EST. The more games you play, and win the higher the rank you will get. Aim for at least Pro 2 , which is 4-5 games.** Squad Battles resets on Wednesday - 5pm EST and you will receive your rewards on Thursday at 5pm EST. —- some people still don’t know this, so have that memorized and you’ll know more than some people.
Squad Battles affects your win-loss ratio, and Players Stats
Squad Battles rewards you in Tradable Packs, Coins, and HUT Sweats CHAMPS points
Challenges
Challenges are a great way to earn a coin stack, and receive free packs - usually earned at the second last - last challenge in the “Event Challenges”. You will also receive Monthly Collectables throughout doing the Event Challenges.
If you opt not to do these Event Challenges, there are “offline” challenges to do - Starting at Rookie, and ending in Superstar you can net a free 200k for doing them all!! It is time consuming, but it’s 200k worth!
Challenge Coin Tiered

Online

Rivals Mode
What is Rivals?
Rivals is playing against people online. PS+ or Xbox Membership is required in order to play online.
Play your first 5 games, get entered into a Division.
Do well - win lots in a row, and you’ll be able to go up in Divisions. This gives yourself better, and bigger rewards. Want to get those rewards in a higher tier, but you’re afraid you’ll lose the division? Hold off, and don’t play. Rivals resets Tuesdays at 5pm EST, Rewards available Wednesday at 5pm EST.
Each game gives you points, as well. You get more points winning than losing, duh. More points will net you better rewards for the week. I normally just aim for Gold.
You can choose from Tradable packs, Untradable packs (2 times the amount as tradable) or coins.
Play a friend
You can play your friend in HUT. They will obviously use their HUT team, and you’ll use yours. You can use expired loan players in this. Make up your own rules, and have fun!

Auction House

Buy players, jerseys, logos, coaches, arenas, cellys, jersey numbers, goalie masks in the Auction House. You can also sell your own, as well. Simply click on the “Auction House” . You can change the category by clicking “X/A” and scroll over to your designated category you want to buy. - Also filter out the things if you want a specific player, or event.
You will have the option to click down and sell players, view them in the next tab and see how much time is left, and also see what price they go for at the very end at the “Sell Transactions” - it will show you what you’ve sold, and by clicking “R2/RT” you will have a timestamp, going back a week, month, year, or all-time. Clicking “L2/LT” you will see your sold items, and expired items — if they didnt sell they’ll go here.
• Since you are new?? There is a “Market Crash” happening right now. Load yourself up with “Base” 84+ cards for cheap - Mackinnon, Kane, McDavid - best Base player - Hedman, Vasilevskiy, etc., —- Tall goalies are “meta” , as well as “speedy” players. —
I would also suggest buying TOTW Players, they will rebound in price.
Sets
Do your re-rolls what even is a “re-roll” ? A reroll is trading in 8 of a specific “level” to 2 of the “next level” players. For example 8 Bronze Players to 2 Silver Players. 8 Silver Players to 2 Gold Players. Lastly, we have 8 Gold Players to 2 Gold Players with one being an 80+ Player. I would not suggest doing the Gold -> Gold reroll
You can also trade in Monthly Collectables you get from the Daily login for a Free Gold Collect / Icon. This costs 30 Monthly Collectables. You can also get packs, or a 80-82 player. You can get 2 per day - Daily Pack you get every 24hrs, plus doing the Daily Challenges.
When a player gets 50 Gold Players, you can lock those into a Gold or Icon Collectable. Each will help your team in various ways, lets look at it.
There is a set right now under “Winterinternational” where you trade in 100 Gold Players to 3 Gold Collectables, I highly suggest this, especially as a new player - redeemable twice
—- The Winterinternational Collectables from the Event Challenges gives you a free Gold Collectable or helps with building a 91/92 random player, or specific player. For the free Gold Collectable you need 21 Winterinternational Collectables. —
Icon Collectable - Untradable Master Icons. 1 Icon Collectable is an 85 Master Icon. There’s 84-89 OVR Master Icons available. Each one requires more and more Icon Collectables.
—- Master Icons will eventually go to 99 OVR. Will require more Icons. Lower OVR Icons will need more Icons to get to Max OVR - 99. Higher Icons - Gretz / Lem. will require less.
To get Lemieux / Gretzy it is 7? Icon Collectables.
Gold Collectables - Tradable / Untradable Event Master Set Players (MsPs). Less Gold Collectables will net you an Untradable MSP , More Gold Collectables will net you a Tradable MSP. You can also get yourself specific 92 MsPs this event by doing their tasks. — They are Untradable. —
Normally I go Tradable, and sell them for more coins. This allows you to build your favourite team the fastest.

Team

Store
Also under this is “Store” . Right now until Tuesday at 5pm EST you can get a free 90 OVR player! What a great way to start! Just pick your favourite one - THERE IS NO WRONG CHOICE!!
Seriously grinds my gears seeing a post “what 90 is the best” “who should I choose?” It is YOUR GAME! What works for others , may not work for you. Pick YOUR FAVOURITE!
Base & Premium Packs are always there. Base packs are 5k coins, Premium Packs are 7.5k coins. Every other weekday we will see a new pack enter the store. New Events bring more packs, containing specific stuff. One guarantees a Gold Collectable, and a Winterinternational Player. Since Boxing Day is today, there are packs out for it!! These packs end on Monday at 5pm EST.
A player can also buy packs by purchasing “points” to purchase points, click the Triangle or Y button in the store.
To see how much a pack is in “points” it is the Green Circle “Pucks” besides the coins. Currently the guaranteed Winterinternational and Gold Collectable pack is $25.

Change your team players, lineups, goalies, coaches, add better players, etc.,
You can change your strategies by going to “Manage Lineups” and “Strategies”.
Also there is the “Settings” to fix your camera, puck size, visual / audio, and controls.

Sae Niijima is the best character in Persona 5 (spoilers)

Posted this in Persona 5 and it kept getting auto removed for whatever reason, i spent a long time writing it so here it is!
Sae Niijima is the best part of Persona 5 (spoilers)
I'll start by just noting that I'm going to be talking about Makoto a decent amount also, although mostly in relation to Sae.
I'm not here to convince you that Sae Niijima should be your personal favorite part of Persona 5. I'm not even here to convince you that you should her if you don't; part of the beauty of her character is that she isn't always all that likable anyway. What I am here to do is explain to you why, from a writing standpoint, Sae is absolutely one of the very best parts of the story.
Persona and the Absence of Parent/Child Relationships
I read a great reddit post a while back regarding Makoto's character that went into a lot more depth on this issue than I'm going to, and I've also seen a number of other people comment on the positive change that the Sae/Makoto relationship made in this regard, so I doubt that my perspective on this will be particularly new for anyone reading (I am going to find that reddit post and provide a link in the comments after writing this, btw). However, I do think it's a key factor in what makes Sae so effective, and so I'm going to talk about it anyway. In a series full of teenagers with little to no notable parental influence, Sae and Makoto's relationship manages to bring family life to the forefront of the story. While Sae is Makoto's older sister, and not her mother, the significant age different between them and Sae's role as guardian colors their dynamic with parent/child overtones. The game does not half ass the exploration of this relationship; many scenes and lines of dialogue are dedicated to fleshing it out and exploring it. Through it, we are able to experience a new type of conflict in a Persona story: loyalty to family versus the goals of the group. As I noted earlier, most parents in Persona games are absent, and therefore cannot provide any sort resistance to a character's goals. The pull that Makoto feels towards her sister even as she actively goes against her by working with the Phantom Thieves is constant and palpable, even allowing her to serve as a red herring for the traitor (not a very convincing red herring, mind you, but a red herring nonetheless). The scene where Sae receives her calling card and Makoto breaks down crying, declaring that she is "on your [Sae's] side" is heartbreaking. It serves as the culmination to the mental and emotional conflict that Makoto has been experiencing the entire game.
I think it's also important to note the complexity of this dynamic: it is simultaneously very loving and yet filled with lingering resentment. I think this is something that is lost on many people, and the game could have done a better job portraying it at times (my most significant critique would be that there is no scene depicting their reconciliation after Sae's palace). Yet, I don't think it can be questioned that there is clearly a deep love between them. As I already discussed, Makoto's feelings are obvious, since the loyalty she feels to Sae acts as her primary source of conflict throughout the entirety of the game. Sae is a more complicated case. Her acting as Makoto's guardian and providing for her is the most obvious sign that she cares. I don't know the details of the custody system in Japan, but I highly doubt that Sae was "required" to take Makoto in, nor was she automatically given custody. She probably had to petition for it. The pressure to provide for another person is clearly a contributing factor in her unhealthy obsession to succeed at her job. The fact that her confidant actually begins following the revelation that Makoto was part of the Phantom Thieves is also very notable, as it marks the beginning of her really trying to listen to/believe the protagonist's story.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention *that* scene, and you all know which one I'm talking about. It has spawned A LOT of Sae hate and a lot of admittedly very funny memes. The scene where Sae lashes out at Makoto is one of the most brutal in the entire game, with many fans claiming that her actions in this moment are utterly unforgivable. While I do understand this sentiment, I would counter with the idea that most people, at some stage in their life, have said something horrible to somebody that they love. This is part of what makes Sae such a wonderfully human character: she isn't perfect. Far from it. She fucks up and does bad things, just like people do in real life. I think her immediate response after saying this speaks volumes. She apologizes immediately, and yes, it's an awkward, shitty apology, but it's clearly an apology coming from someone who knows they did something really wrong and has no idea how to fix it. Anyway, I've been on this topic for a while, so let's move on.
Plot Relevance and the Structural Backbone of Persona 5
I think the only character that you could reasonably argue has more plot relevance than Sae is Akechi, and that is mostly only because of his role as the protagonist's "rival" character. Despite Akechi being the detective that is pursuing the Phantom Thieves, I actually think Sae feels far more like a detective that is pursuing the Phantom Thieves. This is due in large part to the fact that her job requires investigation as well, but regardless, my point is that she feels like more of an active threat. Her obsession with them is brilliantly escalated; while she does view them as criminals and disagrees with their methods from the start, it isn't until they take down Kaneshiro that she truly fixates on them. In her mind, they stole her chance at a promotion, and that makes things personal between them. She is an important source of information on the mental shutdowns, as she is revealed to be secretly investigation them on the side. Unbeknownst to her, this also means that she is acting against Shido and the SIU for the entirety of the game, which makes her one of their targets and prompts them to assign her to the Phantom Thieves case. This is an active effort to set her up for a loss, and her desperation as the weeks go on and she continues to make little progress is palpable.
She also serves as the structural backbone of the game, which I absolutely love but has also spawned a lot of memes online (someone must have wiped your ass when you took a shit, who was it?! Tell me!). The very first shot of the game is the front of her casino, with the statue of her out front holding the judgment scale in her hand. The structure of the game from that point on, all the way to the end of her palace, is centered around the main character convincing her to believe him, and side with the Phantom Thieves. If you miss a deadline for one of the palaces, you will get a game over, because the inaccurate recount of events has failed to convince Sae Niijima to save your life. This is the crux of the Phantom Theives' master plan to trick Akechi, and is their greatest gamble. They are banking on the idea that, at the end of the day, Sae is a good person. Returning to that opening shot of her casino later in the game when you are finally ready to traverse her palace always gives me chills, as it is a clear sign that this is the moment the game has been building towards.
Towards the end of the story (Sae's palace onwards) she serves as a kind of "inside man" for the Phantom Thieves. While they continue to change things in ways that the law can't, she fights for progress from within. When the group sets Shido as their last target, Sae vows to make him face justice in a court of law after they change his heart. This drives home the idea that the Phantom Thieves simply cannot do everything all on their own, and they must work with adults in order to achieve lasting change. In many ways, Sae is the missing piece, and their partnership with her is what makes the team truly complete.
A Life Outside of the Protagonist
I want to start talking about this topic by noting that Persona 3 is my favorite persona game. I've played it four times, and will probably continue to replay it until the day that I simply can no longer hold a controller. One of the things that I love most about the cast of Persona 3 is that you never get the sense that the protagonist is the end all be all; without him, the characters would still likely be experiencing the same triumphs and hardships that they experience throughout the actual story, albeit in a slightly different way or at a different pace. The formation of SEES is not tied to him and the development of the characters does not rely on him. I love the dynamic between Sae and Makoto for many of the same reasons. Their relationship and the issues that go along with it are completely separate from the main character, and even the Phantom Thieves in general. The post about Makoto that I am going to link in the comments also talks about this idea. Without the protagonist, they would still have the same troubled, complicated family dynamic that they have throughout the story. This helps give the sense that there are things that are simply bigger than the main character. While some players may like when the main character feels like the end all be all because it always for a sort of wish-fulfillment self insert, I personally don't prefer it, and so this entirely separate dynamic is very welcome. Sae is also given many scenes dedication to her, whether it be her with Makoto, or her with Akechi, or just her by herself (or with NPCs). The point is, they are scenes completely absent of the protagonist, which is notably different from the rest of the game.
"Rotten Adults" and Unavoidable Hardship
An idea that I think Sae's character is very important in presenting is the notion that sometimes, life just doesn't really allow you to rebel or "stick it to the man" the way that the Phantom Thieves do. When Sae lashes out and expresses that Makoto could never possibly understand her struggles because she isn't a provider, she isn't exactly incorrect. The vast majority of their father's responsibilities did fall on her shoulders upon his death, simply because she was the eldest. So, where Makoto has the freedom to act out and "rebel," Sae does not have the same luxury. Her portrayal always gave me the sense that she was person with a very strong sense of justice, who entered the field of law because she hoped that she would be able to do some good and make positive change. However, when she got there, she quickly grew disillusioned with it all when she realized that "justice" didn't actually matter at all. This is in part due to her father's death while on duty, which contributed to her budding belief that justice is meaningless, and in part due to the fact that justice is quite literally meaningless in her job that is supposed to be all about upholding the law. She was stuck in her job, however, because she had to provide for another person and therefore couldn't just quit because she was unhappy with the system in place. So, she ultimately adhered to the idea that winning is all that matters, not the concept of what is lawful or unlawful. It's quite a classic case of "person that initially hated the system ultimately grows to perpetuate it."
I think this perspective is important because the game is very fond of throwing around terms like "rotten adults" (looking at you, Ryuji). Sae's character presents the idea that some people who grow do bad things aren't evil, they have just been dealt a bad hand in life and are ultimately beaten into submission due to their circumstances. The fact that she manages to change her own heart rather than having the Phantom Thieves do it for her furthers this idea, because it demonstrates her innate goodness even though it had been hidden for a long time.
Anyway, I think that's it for my rambling. If you actually read this far, I really hope you enjoyed, and thank you for reading! I'd love to hear any thoughts that you have in the comments.

Trials of Agony, an exploitable system

Trials of Osiris. Once the greatest most anticipated heart pounding, anxiety inducing game mode ever! To succeed you must be... Flawless.
At least, that's what it used to be. Now it's more like a casino.
Top tier players waltz into games with people far below their own skill level. They utterly annihilate them, then move to the next table. So to speak.
Round 1 farming is a plague. An infection caused by a faulty system, tokens.
It's not the tokens fault, they themselves fill their role rather well, it's how people acquire them that's the issue.
THE PROBLEM
Sweats McGee, plugged into his Gfuel IV drip and his gaming catheter, holds his Felwinters close to his heart. Trials has come, and it's time to get free tokens.
He tightens his stompees, maybe does the laces on his dunemarchers a little tighter today, and thanks the space dorito for ice magic, before heading out to 0 win farm.
His 3 stack comes up against an innocent trio of new lights, fresh meat.
After a completely one sided duel, McGee is a few tokens richer. But instead of moving on to more of a challenge, he resets his card!
Back to 0 wins, and a new trio of new lights, and most importantly, quick easy tokens...
This is the issue. The top players have figured out that the best way to quickly farm god rolls, is to stay on the bottom rung! Poor Tommy who saw the cool new game mode on the game he got for Christmas stands no chance against these heartless monsters.
If saint could see what what you were doing, he'd call it shameful.
A redesign of the reward system is in order. How do we satisfy all levels of players with an activity meant to be the ultimate crucible experience?
Well actually, I've figured it out. We make tiers.
Easy way to fix trials: 2 separate tiers.
Tier 1, non flawless this week.

Rewards only drop from a certain win streak ONCE per week. No more resetting to get tokens all the time, quit whining. People in tier 1 can ONLY match people in tier 1. To pad out the lack of farmability, increase the rewards from tier 1 substantially. Not just more tokens, I'm talking a gun or armor piece with high stats per win. Once you hit flawless? Boom tier 2 time.
Tier 2, The summit of the mountaintop.

Rewards can be earned multiple times in this tier, but you can only match up against other players in tier 2. No more pub stomping at 0 wins for tokens and then resetting. Every match will be against a flawless player of that weekend. Also, rewards will be redistributed, significantly. Way less tokens at a 2 tier one win streak. Way more for going flawless at tier 2. Also, guns and shit, back to the 3, 5, and 7 drops. Have a tier 2 flawless weapon drop like some insanely good shit too. I'm talking 66+ stat armor guaranteed! A definite drop of both an adept weapon AND mod from one run too.
Tier 2 flawless will be the hardest, truest challenge. We shouldn't skimp on rewards.
People who hit tier 2 will always queue for tier 2. A tier 1 player that weekend CAN queue into tier 1 with Tier 2 players, BUT NOT the other way around.
The tier 2 players who are piggybacking in tier 1 will receive 0 rewards at every point in a tier 1 flawless run!
Conclusion
If you managed to read this far, respect. This was awfully wordy. The way to keep top tier players out of the bottom rung is to force them out, or remove the incentive of it. Let me know your thoughts in the comments, I'd love to discuss!

Another 10 Overlooked Single Player Indie Games

There are also some links within the first link that discuss indie local multiplayer games as well.
Introduction
We're all familiar with the Hotline Miami's, Hollow Knight's, and Celeste's of the world. These are some of the indie games that hit the big time. Of course, for every one of these games, there's 100 other indie games that have been glossed over, relegated to a spot in a digital store few people will ever find themselves in. I wanted to bring attention to some of these lesser known indie games once again.
Details About the List
I'm going to order them according to Metacritic Critic Ratings. Steam is the only one on the list with all 10 games featured (Steam has 10 of them, Switch has 9 of them, PlayStation 4 has 7 of them, and Xbox One has 5 of them), but the Switch gets more reviews than the other platforms, so I will it use the Switch version of all the games for their review scores, except #8, where I will use the Steam version, since that’s the only version of it available. The two bottom games have pretty low critic ratings (60% with 1 Critic Review and 53% with 2 Critic Reviews). I personally disagree with the low scores of these two games, but it's only fair that you hear from more than just me. Keep in mind that games with only one or two User Ratings on Metacritic will not show the score. A game needs at least three User Ratings on Metacritic before the score will be shown. This is not the case for Critic Reviews.
Currently 9 of the games are on sale on Steam right now, and 5 of them are on sale on Switch. None of them are on sale on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One at the moment.
For the purpose of this post, I’m just going to stick with saying “achievements” and “getting all achievements” instead of “trophies” and “platinum trophy” since Steam has all 10 games on the list. You can basically substitute these with “trophies” and “platinum trophy” if you’re a PlayStation gamer. I will make mention of the two games on here that don’t include a platinum trophy however.
Platforms will include a link to the U.S. store page of the game for each platform. Price is in U.S. dollars.
1. Ultra Hat Dimension
2. Bot Vice
3. Valfaris
4. Inertial Drift
5. Golf Peaks
6. Horizon Shift ‘81
7. Pato Box
8. Primal Light
9. Tamashii
10. Neon Drive
Special shoutout to Valfaris which is my favorite game on the list and, again, one my favorite 2D run & guns ever.
Have you played any of these games? What are some other overlooked single player indie games?
