Leveraged bull ETFs outperform. Why not buy and hold?

Leveraged ETFs are often disparaged for exposing investors to leverage decay. Accordingly, they're often recommended only as day trading instruments. However, the long term graphs (I'm looking at SPXL and TQQQ) indicate that these ETFs provide superior returns compared to their non leveraged counterparts.
Barring the possibility of a serious market downturn (I acknowledge that that possibility is an important consideration), as medium-term investments (1-3 years) are these ETFs really as inadvisable as the popular press makes them out to be? If so, why?

A solution for the IV crush victims. Futures

I've watched this sub evolve from trading 3x ETF's like UVXY and NUGT to the pure casino that is buying options. So far this week everyone seems to be falling victim to theta and the evaporation of IV. I think it's time for this sub to graduate to Futures. Specifically Micro futures. Since most users are sub $10k. Pure leveraged delta without any theta factor.
Basic contract specs on micros:
/MES - $5 per point, margin req per contract ~$700 - 1900(depending on market volatility)
/MNQ - $2 per point, margin $850 - 2600
/MGC - $10 per point, margin $550 - 1200
23\5 trading hours for constant degeneracy, and access to futures options if you just can't help yourselves.

This Time is Different, And It's OK to Get Involved

I'm normally a value investor who rarely makes a move outside a low-fee etf or mutual fund. This time is different. Every 'expert' has been proven wrong and cries of 'Fuck Buffett' and the Portney rules to investing (1. stocks always go up, and 2. If you have any problems, see rule 1) have dominated headlines. Retail investors with less than 10k to their name are crushing industry veterans. Over the last 3 months we've seen some high profile fuck ups from absolutely legendary investors:
If your investment horizon is 10 - 20 years, this post isn't for you. I've been investing for 15 years, but in the next 1 - 3 years, I'll need to pull out a large amount of money for a down payment on a house. So this time, today, is different.
In 2017 I made a killing in Crypto, selling everything early December and walking away. If I held I would have doubled my money, but I got out alive and way up. It was stupid investing, but I figured there's a 30% (finger in air) chance I 10x my money. I'll take that bet every time and eventually I'll profit. Right now, we are experiencing exactly the same hype in the market, albeit this post is almost too late. For the next few months, I believe we will experience volatility like we've never seen before. If that is the case, short-term expiration options will misprice volatility. Bets both directions will return greater than 1x, making this a very interesting investing opportunity. You can't just choose up or down, I mean, you could, but it's more likely you'll lose the farm.
There is gold in them hills, and as a value investor or someone who believes in general economic principles and present value of future cash flows, it's absolutely ok to play in the casino while the odds are stacked in your favor.
What's my strategy? Well, I moved to mainly cash: I'm now at about 60%, I'm holding a few stocks like AMZN, AAPL etc, but I emptied most of my mutual funds and etfs to cash, unless there was a serious capital gains issue). I've taken 10% of my money and I'm buying short term (about 1 - 2 weeks until expiration) calls and puts. I started doing this a few weeks ago, and so far so good. Occasionally I'll 'guess' which way the market is going to move. On the 11th, for example, I lost 100% of my call options, but my puts quadrupled in value. I exited the by EOD with a 3x gain on about 5% of my portfolio.
Overall, yes, if you do the math, my net worth went down on Thursday, but overall I saved myself a fortune, both by being in cash and by exploiting this insane volatility mispricing. I get it, it might just be luck, that's why I'm posting here. I'd like to hear what you all think.
I'm not advocating posting meme stocks or even really bringing up too much discussion about short term investing strategies here. My point is, it is not just ok, but it's prudent, to get involved in what could be a huge opportunity with a portion of your money. If you're a true investor, you know when a market is behaving irrationally and it is your job to manage your risk and, if for some, recognize how to make short term money.
I'd love to hear why I'm wrong. Please keep in mind, if your hold horizon is even like 3+ years, this post likely isn't what you need. But in 1 - 3 years, the market could be up 30% or down 30%. If it's down 30%, I'll lose my future home. That said, I'm not going to sit all cash and wait while I think I've been successful investing in my past and have hope in my investing near term future.
